BREAKING NEWS: GROUP GOES DIGITAL FOR EU02
27 December 2002
The London Men's Self-Help Pub Crawl Group made use of ground-breaking digital photography techniques for their most recent crawl, EU02, which took place successfully on Saturday 7 December 2002. Despite the risk of a massive insurance claim, Pad used a digital camera to document the crawl, instead of the usual selection of disposable apparatus. "My main concern", he revealed - in an apparent reference to E2K, the group's first crawl - "was to make sure that I never got Robert to look after it for me". He also seemed curiously reluctant to let it fall into the hands of Simon - real name Simon Trait - who also took part in the day's activities.
Details of those activities remained sketchy right up until the final days before the crawl, but the wholly tenuous nature of EU02 soon became clear: the group had to visit 15 pubs during the course of the day, each of which had to have some connection with the member states of the European Union. Alex, who turned up for EU02 after a three-crawl hiatus, went into more detail: "For example, we went to the French House for France; and for the United Kingdom we drank at the British Lion." But when confronted with an accusation of lameness, other members of the group became defensive and denied that some of the choices had been, at best, weak. "What do you mean 'The Prince of Teck is an Australian pub'?" asked a mildly irritated Alan. Fellow drinker Tim backed him up: "Everyone knows that Teck is in Germany. That's good enough for us."
The full list of establishments visited is to be revealed on the website, accompanied by Pad's high-quality digital imagery, just as soon as Robert has got round to posting long-awaited details of the two previous crawls, Stationlink and Vilnius. In the meantime, rumours persist that Ian has been sacked from the group for serial non-attendance - though it seems that Alex has been officially reinstated following his successful participation in EU02. And this latest crawl was also boosted by the presence of guest self-helper Mick, who caught an admirably early train from Leicester in order to make sure he didn't miss a single pub.
